They thought we might not notice. They crossed their fingers and toasted to the Friday News Dump institution that our government has come to rely on when they have something they don't want to have to tell us (like your dad about the birds and the bees, or your mom when your pet fish died). Alas, I was paying attention. And as I am just watching, so was Rachel Maddow.
Secretary Salazar (Dept. of the Interior) announced today that they will not be overturning the Bush-era limitations on Polar Bear protections.
The Bush policy does offer some protections for the bears, but it is notoriously vague about how that should be done and how those protections - and violations of the policy - should be enforced.
Yes, yes, Polar Bears can swim. But they aren't fish. They do have to find dry land at some point. I think we'll be hearing about this again.
