figures of speech

A few more bands you aren't listening to (but you should be!):

1) Apostle of Hustle
A rather unknown canadian indie band, made up of a handful of guys with a retro sound and a gig at Lollapalooza (i know, 'palooza isn't what it used to be...). If it's possible to be mellow and punk, these guys are it. Check them out.

2) Pretty Girls Make Graves
Granted including this band is a little morbid (not only because of the band name, but because the band has laid down their instruments indefinitely). Despite the fact that there probably won't be any new music, in the long life of this band they produced a truckload of music for you to hunt down and listen to. I'm a sucker for music recommendations (when they come from credible sources), especially when they are "a favorite band of my favorite band". If the people who make the best music I listen to think these guys are awesome, they're worth the time to check them out. Did that make sense? Nevermind, just Click. And yes, you can buy the stuff on iTunes.

3) The New Pornographers
I swear, Canadians are the future (and present) of good music. These guys sound like a perfect blend of 70s original rock (think the beatles, the rolling stones, etc.) and 2000s punk/indie rock. Some of it is mellow, some of it is, well different. Most of it is upbeat and all of it deserves a listen. Besides, they have a really awesome name :) Check them out

4) Menomena
One of my new personal favorites - obtained a copy of their new album, burned it on a cd, and it hasn't been out of my cd player since. They kind of remind me of the Postal Service, but edgier. Again, also a favorite band of my favorite band - but Menomena is on its way to a huge fan base. After I heard the album I looked them up, and the buzz about this band is loud. They've got people talking.

Now, I really hate saying "this band sounds like this other band I listen to" because I think there exists a lot of individuality and unexplored territory in music. However, I'm not music critic, nor am I a professional musician - and neither are you. So I use what I know. :)

Other thoughts:
-Anne Coulter is still a douchebag, and maybe an alcoholic? I wish I wasn't kidding about that last part.
-Once again, President Bush has demonstrated that he is "the decider" by deciding that he and his cronies are above the law of the country.
-I read a quite brilliant letter to the editor in my local newspaper this morning, which stated that being a godless liberal isn't necessarily and insult because it wasn't godless liberals who caused the attack on the world trade center, nor was it godless liberals who sent our sons and daughters to war. Conservatives cut taxes and government programs, touting liberals as promoting big government and wanting to take the american people's money; and yet when these Conservatives age, they complain and fuss for want liberal democrats to put in place government programs (which these conservatives axed years ago) to assist them. I'm not doing the article justice with my description here, and sadly it isn't posted on the paper's website. Maybe I'll transcribe it later.
