5 Bands You Should Be Listening To:
5. Death Cab for Cutie
Yes, they are fairly mainstream, but you would be surprised how many people aren't listening to them - people who would love their music. Their album "Plans" is fantastic and mellow, although has a little bit of a bitter-heartache aftertaste.
Besides, DCfC is just more proof that Chris Walla loves you and wants you to be happy.
4. Interpol
I know I've mentioned them before, but they are a very unique and sort of alternative band (in every possible meaning of the word). While their music isn't quite so easy to get a hold of, you can get enough of it on itunes to try it out. I think the air of mystery (or lack of information about them) combined with their fairly established reputation makes them all the more appealing to the "my other favorite band is getting old and i need something new in my playlist" crowd.
3. The Cliks
The bandmembers themselves are as colorful as the music they produce. Rock with a kind of european edge. They aren't really my style, but sometimes you know music is good even if you don't like it. Nonetheless, check them out. If you find you like them, they will be on tour this summer so you will have plenty of opportunities to catch them live.
2. Against Me!
Generally I'm repelled by any "explicit content" labels on music I listen to (not because I'm a prude, but because I just have to ask "why?" Explicit Content labels also wreak of those dirty mainstream rap songs with too much humping and not enough art. That's probably just my personal schema, but whatever). Anyway, I caught up with Against Me!s music because of the Tegan and Sara connection: yes, the ever elusive Sara did some work on their recent album, and both have become consistent plugging fans of the band. Against Me!s music is very much rock, with an indie flair - they almost remind me of a harder version of the 70s rock my parents raised me on. So far I haven't found anything to justify the explicit content, and because the music has been good and of substance, I don't really care. You should check them out because they're up and coming (means their music is probably still cheap, hey?) and awesome. Peer pressure - just do it.
1. Spoon
I am loving this band.
Spoon has some techno (not techno, but i don't know what else to call it when they use synthesizers and cool sounds beyond just guitars and stuff) with their mellow indie tone. But they aren't as mellow as DCfC. You can really get into the songs. They are unique - they don't sound like anything else I listen to, which I consider to be a major plus. They're fun and new-ish.
I can't say anything more other than a tremendous Check them OUT!!
And of course, if you aren't listening to Tegan and Sara, or if you haven't at least checked them out - what's the matter with you?
Finally, here is a picture. So everyone can know what is going on in the background as I type this. :)
